What Paint Correction Actually Does

Paint correction is the process of using machine polishing to reduce or remove defects that live within the clear coat layer of your vehicle's paint. When done properly, it restores the surface to a cleaner, clearer and more reflective condition.

Most of what people describe as dull or scratched paint is actually damage confined to the clear coat — the outermost protective layer applied over the color. Swirl marks from improper washing, light scratches, haze from oxidation and water spotting from mineral deposits all fall into this category.

Machine polishing works by removing a controlled amount of clear coat to level the surface, eliminating or significantly reducing the appearance of those defects. The result is paint that reflects light more evenly and looks noticeably cleaner and deeper.

Paint correction improves defects within the clear coat. Scratches that have cut through to the base coat or primer, deep gouges and damage that has penetrated the paint layers cannot be corrected through polishing and would require touch-up paint or bodywork.

Every Vehicle Is Different

There is no single paint correction process that applies to every vehicle. The right approach depends on several factors that we assess before any polishing begins.

Paint Condition

A vehicle with light swirl marks from regular washing requires a different approach than one with heavy oxidation or years of accumulated surface damage. We assess what's actually present before recommending a correction level.

Paint Thickness

Clear coat has a finite thickness, and polishing removes a small amount with each pass. We take paint thickness into account to ensure the correction process is safe and leaves adequate clear coat remaining.

Defect Severity

Lighter defects can often be addressed with a single-stage polish. Heavier defects may require a more aggressive compound followed by a finishing polish to refine the surface. We use the least aggressive approach that achieves the result.

Your Goals

Some customers want the highest level of correction possible before applying a ceramic coating. Others want a meaningful improvement without the time or investment of a full multi-stage correction. We work to match the process to what you're actually trying to achieve.

The Paint Correction Process

01

Wash & Decontaminate

We start with a thorough decontamination wash to remove surface dirt, followed by a clay bar treatment to pull bonded contaminants from the paint. Polishing over a contaminated surface causes additional damage, so this step is non-negotiable.

02

Paint Inspection

Each panel is inspected under dedicated lighting to identify the type and depth of defects present. This tells us which products and pads to use and how aggressive the correction needs to be.

03

Test Section

Before committing to the full vehicle, we perform a test section on a small area to confirm the chosen compound and pad combination is achieving the intended result without being unnecessarily aggressive.

04

Machine Polishing

We work panel by panel using a dual-action or rotary polisher with the appropriate compound and pad. Each section gets the attention it needs — we don't rush through panels to finish faster.

05

Refinement

When a more aggressive compound is used to address heavier defects, a finishing polish follows to refine the surface and maximize gloss before the job is complete.

06

Paint Protection

Corrected paint is vulnerable without protection. We discuss the appropriate next step — whether that's a ceramic coating for long-term protection or a quality sealant — so the work we've done is preserved.

Paint Correction Before Ceramic Coating

Ceramic coating bonds directly to the paint surface and is designed to last. That permanence is one of its strengths — and also why the condition of the paint underneath matters so much.

A coating applied over swirl marks, oxidation or surface haze will lock those defects in place. The coating itself may look glossy, but the underlying imperfections will still be visible — and they'll be significantly harder to address after the coating has cured.

Correcting the paint first gives the coating the best possible surface to bond to. The result is a finish that looks as good as the paint can look, protected for the long term.
